Agenda
The seminar is an integration of estate planning, elder and family law as it applies to our LGBT community.  We will discuss how are families are created, the different forms and types of legal relationships, the status of DOMA cases throughout the country and the impact of DOMA on the community in both intact and dissolving relationships, including the income tax implications.

The seminar will address the failure of third parties to recognize our relationships and documents and how to capitalize on this non-recognition where taxing agencies see us as legal strangers.  We will include planning information on using the marital deduction in anticipation of the possible repeal or judicial determination that DOMA is unconstitutional.

We will focus on what you can do for your clients if the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 is not extended.  The impact of the reduction of the federal exclusion amount from $5,000,000 to $1,000,000 when coupled with the lack of the marital deduction is a significant legal event for the LGBT community.

We will also discuss what is happening to the part of the community that is aging.  Discrimination and mistreatment in care facilities is forcing some back into the closet to protect themselves from harm.  We will screen the documentary Gen Silent and discuss social security issues.
